Banned Books Week, September 18-24

Join us in celebrating Banned Books Week!

From Bannedbooksweek.org:

"Since it was founded in 1982, Banned Books Week has drawn attention to the attempts to remove books and other materials from libraries, schools, and bookstores. Banned Books Week 2022 has the theme “Books Unite Us. Censorship Divides Us.” All readers deserve to see themselves reflected in the books available to them, and people better understand themselves and each other when given the opportunity to choose what they want to read without restriction. This is particularly true for young people, who are most impacted by censorship. The theme image of caged birds reminds us that censorship isolates us from information and from each other."

The ALA believes:

  • Books are tools for understanding complex issues.

  • Young people deserve to see themselves reflected in a library’s books.

  • Parents should not be making decisions for other parents’ children.

  • Individuals should be trusted to make their own decisions about what to read.

  • Limiting young people’s access to books does not protect them from life’s complex and challenging issues.

At SHS, we are showing awareness of book challenges/bans, solidarity with those whose favorite books have been challenged/banned, and a commitment to ensuring that our country maintains a free people without censorship through the following activities:

  • Look for the Banned Books Week Challenge post to appear on Google Classroom later this week. If you do not think you'll participate in it and don't want to have the "assignment" showing as "Due" on Classroom, let me know and I can remove you from the post

  • Pick up a Banned Books Week fill-in-the-blank contest form in the library

  • Stop in the library to view the Banned Books Week slideshow of infographics on the board

  • Check out the hallway display near the library

  • Listen to announcements for BBW PSAs, read by READ Club

  • Join READ Club to be part of a group of readers who celebrate each individual's freedom to read and to information
